Friday, May 9th, 2008

Forget spinning cubes with video stuck on their sides and instead check out the demo below. From Immersive Media, same the guys that brought you street view on Google Maps, comes an innovative new way to navigate 360 degrees inside a live playing video. How is it delivered? Flash of course.

Check out this demo. Once the main content starts to play you can click inside the video and drag your mouse into the direction you want to view. Make sure you check out the snowboarders at about 1 minute in - and follow them as they go over the kicker.

Flash Now Open Source!

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Today, Adobe announced the Open Screen Project and with it came the ultimate good news — the SWF and FLV/F4V formats are now totally open source. Adobe has dropped the licensing restrictions on the formats. So, not only can you create tools that writes SWFs (this was already open) but now you can create tools that plays the formats back (you no longer need to just rely on the Flash Player).

The Open Screen Project initiative by Adobe is supported by a group of industry leaders, including ARM, Chunghwa Telecom, Cisco, Intel, LG Electronics Inc., Marvell, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics Co., Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Verizon Wireless.

Well, one of the missing name in the list above is that of Apple, which feels that Flash is not good enough for the iPhone. It may be remembered that CEO Steve Jobs has publicly criticized Flash for being too slow.

The project is dedicated to driving rich Internet experiences across televisions, personal computers, mobile devices, and consumer electronics. Also supporting the Open Screen Project are leading content providers, including BBC, MTV Networks, and NBC Universal, who want to reliably deliver rich Web and video experiences live and on-demand across a variety of devices.

Unworthy of the Flash Goddess Crown

Friday, April 25th, 2008

So back in January this year, Flashnewz reported the commencement of the 2008 Flash Goddess Award. Flashgoddess.com, a site promoting the creativity of female flash designers everywhere was set to grant a mortal woman a title that of a goddess! Alas, the deity was spurned by her subjects and due to so few applicants to the contest, a FlashGoddess was not dubbed her title nor granted her magnificent powers. The winner was to receive a number of gifts including a copy of Flair, a Flash presentation software package, $500 worth of development files, as well as tickets, accolades and member profile status to the 2008 FITC Design and Technology Awards.

The FITC is a Canadian-based organization with the purpose of focusing on new media technology development. The FITC Toronto & Design Festival is a conference that showcases new interactive design techniques and development tools with exhibits, workshops, award ceremonies and social party mixers. Unfortunately no one was showered with this multitude of goodies, but some women that did participate received some tickets to the event that were originally designed as runner-up prizes.

The recipients of these tickets went to the following:

Kate Bond www.pushingink.com
Shauna Ehninger www.thedreadedgrove.com
Jennifer Kossack www.jennicartoon.com
Elysha Poirier
www.elyshapoirier.com
Michelle Rueda ruedaminute.com

Even though there will be no reigning FlashGoddess this year, a hearty congratulations goes out to the featured flash designers for their excellent work and admissions to the design festival.

How About This for Some Fantastic Looking Video?

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Fabio ‘Encoding Wizard’ Sonnati has outdone himself once again and published an HD resolution video clip on his site. What’s stunning about this example is the low bitrate of only 500kbit.sec, while maintaining an amazing quality.

Double click the video to go full screen. Nice job Fabio!

Flvmagazine.com Caught Stealing Site Content

Friday, April 11th, 2008

It’s amazing how unscrupulous (and naive) some folks are these days. What’s the matter with Flvmagazine.com (no need to go there by the way, the site is rubbish) publishing content that’s blatantly scraped off other websites? And not only that, but after stealing the content they don’t even give credit to the original author.
Simon just spotted one of his tutorials on Flvmagazine’s website. I had a little dig around - and now I wonder if Lee Brimelow knows that some of his content is also being pirated. Who else?

Flvmagazine (by Flvhosting.com) - the company which advertised on this site once and never paid their bill - should get a grip.

Badmash Flash on US Prime Minister Candidacy

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Badmash is bored. Don’t get us wrong. We love us some Bollywood. We couldn’t help but getting addicted to MTV Roadies. We even admit to curling up with an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati every once in a while.

Keyur Patel, of Velocity Interactive Group, likes giving birth to new companies. His latest kid is a Badmash, a newly formed pune-based (India) Studio. Sandeep Sood of DoubtSourcing, who thinks brown people are funny, is the head writer at Badmash.

Using Video.smoothing with the FLVPlayback Component

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Sometime last year Fabio asked this question on his blog:
“Every day on the web new video related sites appear. Video sharing, video delivery sites or simply mashups, all Flash Video based. I’m very happy about this but there is a thing I can’t understand and it is : why very often is video.smoothing property not used ? This is completely obscure to me because in my opinion a smoothed video is always better than a blocky one.”

Of course he’s right, video.smoothing is simple yet effective, once turned on your video will look a lot better.

The EFF Speaks Out On Flash Video DRM

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s (EFF) Seth Schoen has posted an article on the upcoming - as he calls it - DRM features of Flash Media Server 3.

Make of DRM as a technology what you like but I think the author has missed the point here, or does not understand the purpose of RTMPE, the new encrypted flavor of Adobe’s Real Time Messaging Protocol. FMS3 doesn’t actually apply any kind of DRM to the video content itself, it merely secures the transmission and thereby circumvents content from being intercepted in transit, a process that’s similar to the way that your credit card information is being transmitted to a payment provider when you buy things online - anyone listening in on that transmission will see just garbage that would take years to decrypt.

Serious Flash/UPnP Issue Identified

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Click on a single malicious Flash file, and you risk losing control of your router, according to two researchers.  GNUCitizen.org’s Petko D. Petkov and Adrian Pastor judge the issue to be “HIGHLY SEVERE!

So let’s take a step back to examine the issue itself.  Between two articles, Petkov and Pastor spent about 2,300 words writing about it, and if you want to fully understand the matter, we’d recommend reading them all.

But, if the what-it-is-and-how-to-fix-it version will satisfy you, Robert McMillan summarizes, “By tricking a victim into viewing a malicious Flash file, an attacker could use UPnP to change the primary DNS (Domain Name System) server used by the router to find other computers on the Internet.  This would give the attacker a virtually undetectable way to redirect the victim to fake Web sites.”

McMillan later continues, “The attack is particularly worrisome because it is cross-platform – any operating system that supports Flash is susceptible – and because it is based on features of UPnP and Flash, not bugs that could be easily fixed by Adobe or the router vendors.”

Here’s the good news, though: as far as anyone knows, it’s just the two researchers who know anything about this method of attack.  Also – although may be side effects from doing this – Petkov and Pastor give instructions on how to turn UPnP off, and say that doing so should effectively prevent the attack.

It’s rare that we see security researchers use bold, all-capital letters in combination with exclamation marks.  You might consider that while thinking through the issue.
